It is possible but if you (still today) are a US citizen all you need to reenter from Canada is a drivers license and a birth certificate.

A couple of years ago (post 911) I visited Canada and when I reentered the US I did have a problem, I hadn't realized the need for a birth certificate, but it was only about a two minute delay.
