The US is drowning in debt. In the future the ability to extend this debt will be curtailed and this will be a factor that leads to stagnation. But there is no way in any reasonable amount of time to go from a gigantic debtor nation to a saving nation -- at least not under current circumstances. Perhaps in ten or twenty years the ship will have turned. But for now, we are stuck with our debts -- and our foreign debts are the ones that weigh so heavily. They must be paid or repudiated. There is no "deflationary" way to deal with this.
