I hope you never saw anything.

I'm right near East Palo Alto in the Bay Area, which in the early 90's was known as the murder capital of the nation. That prompted them to clean things up and raze "Whiskey Gulch".

But not seeing anything is still standard behavior on the east side of 101, though the worst of the gang bangers have been removed, and many Latinos have moved in.

I remember when I was in 7th Grade, my family drove to Stanford Children's Hospital to visit one of my much younger cousins who had a gimpy heart. On the way back, we went around a curve in the road and two police cars were racing side by side and one of them was coming right at us. My dad took what there was of shoulder and barely missed them as they zoomed past. He was really mad and called the Palo Alto police to complain. Since he didn't have badge or car numbers, they didn't do a damned thing. But they had to know who was patrolling in that area at that time. They could have killed all of us.
