The food scene in New Zealand is not as sparkling and trendy as it is in Australia, which has world class restaurants. Both have terrific seafood in addition to lamb.

Both cultures evolved from a diet best represented by a meat pie set in a bowl of peas, to something far more interesting.

Australia has taken in a far wider range and a greater percentage of immigrants, so its easier to find any type of ethnic food in Australia and these different food traditions create an interesting fusion in Australian restaurants and recipes at home. Dinners often mix Thai dishes with dishes from Lebanon or Italy.

The very best food I've ever had in Australia was at a tiny hotel in Cairns QLD, owned and run by two New Zealanders, but they said there was not much of a market for their culinary ability back in Auckland.

Woolworth's, no relationship to the Woolworth's you know, one of the largest grocery chains sells nearly identical food in both nations.
