I was in Albequerque in '90 ('89? can't remember). It seemed ok. Would rather live in Santa Fe. I'm kind of a small-town guy. My weather needs are four seasons or dry. I can't stand hot and humid. I'd take Burlington over Chapel Hill. South of the Mason-Dixon line, and I'll sweat to death. Columbia, SC or any place in Fla are out for me. I'd like to be near water (preferably with lots of wind). Mountains are #2 on my list.

Let me say that I talk trash about moving or investing. My family situation doesn't permit much mobility right now. Realistically, I only have four places that I think I could live. The Bay Area, Portland, Boston, or Burlington, VT. I would invest in Boulder because I could stand to live there if I couldn't rent out a place. I would love to visit the other places mentioned - Ashland, Flagstaff, even Columbia. Collegetowns are much more attractive to me than big cities. Would like to visit Madison as well.

If you own rentals in different cities, is travel to those cities tax deductible? Say I owned a rental in NZ, could I write off a trip to Auckland?
