"The speculation is that it Iran international respect, a hedge against US and Arab hostility, and a bargaining chip against US economic sanctions."

This is something that mindmeld ignores. Iranians aren't Arabs, and that, along with their splinter religion means they aren't popular in the ME. If they get control over the Shiastan oil, they will be even less popular. Hence their need for a large military and nuclear weapons.

Iran has a history of working secretly and profitably with Israel. Who else was keeping Iran's F14s and Cobras flying during Iran/Iraq war? True, the US was selling them parts because they needed the money to fund the Contras, but they didn't have anyone trained to do the work. That is standard when we supplying top end military equipment, we send our people to do maintenance. The only exception is Israel, we do train them to do their own work.
