Too bad the Supreme Court has held that that is an un-Constitutional delegation of Congress' power of the budget.

So, you would need to AMEND the Constitution to put in a line item veto for the President.

(And I say: if you are going to have to amend the Constitution ANYWAY, why not go ahead and just do the complete job? Approve the Balanced Budget Amendment and the problem is solved.)

Or, if you prefer, approve *BOTH* the Balanced Budget amendment AND the Line Item veto amendment at the exact same time. I'm OK with that --- just don't leave out the real cure to persistent deficit over-spending: the Balanced Budget amendment.

Great idea. Give the power of the purse to the emperor. Maybe we could model the system like the Saudi's, where the prince holds an audience and the subjects can come and plead for his favor.
We already have a system where politicians can be held accountable. But people are so partisan, it doesn't work too well.
