Fear not. What was once the crack of doom now is only the sonic boom of change.

McLuhan was once famous but hard to see. Now he is easy to see and will be rehabilitated. He was not talking about communication and media so much as social change that drove "being in touch". The technical problems of communication need solving still. What McLuhan was saying was there was a humanizing effect to the network of the future that had a sociological and animal analog and that this increased pace of interconnection would be mediated by the content, or user of the media and his social construct. What becomes more important in the "faceless" electronic world is the person who controls the media by being its content. There are 1 billion monks in one billion monasteries and no more state secrets. He could see that as key. He did not say how often, as it gave the game away, so he stayed at the top and gave a pattern for the new age in aphorism.

One of the keys is the overall analog that controls the development of the system of interchange. He used the previously thought of image of the village. The world is shrinking. Everybody knew that. It's a small world. Town hall meetings of politicians etc.. a true enough analog. Keep it simple stupid. Superman is everyone once they are connected. And can type. That will change when the tech advances in another peristaltic burp. The Berlin wall fell with the television and telephone. The world will fuse into an electronic beehive once every tom dick and harry does not have to type to internet and the internet is a true fusion/fission multi media. Then Blade Runner will be everyone's life story.

McLuhan did not invent the internet but he was its one true prophet. Finally the mountain came to McLuhan it is built upon his grave. He never touched on spam. Too bad he did not have any solutions there. It's inherent in his theory. Spam is depersonal so should not work in the global village.
