Hey, the LAST thing we need is more communications distractions for the prototypical pick-up driving construction worker, already overwhelmed by steering-accelerating-braking and talking on the cell phone at the same time. They're way worse, and far more dangerous, than the prototypical minivan driving soccer-mom blabbing away while driving. The soccer-mom, while annoying, seems to have the genetic make-up to handle the talk-while-drive exercise without posing much danger to nearby drivers. Not always, but most of the time.

The construction workers in pickups are a different story. So much so, that one of my "rules of thumb" while driving is "pass ASAP" any pickup with a "hire a licensed contractor" bumper sticker. Call me crazy if you want, but the pattern repeats over and over and over, for years and years. At some point you have to do "profiling" while you drive, and avoid the roving random dangers those guys pose.

I'm in the camp that all forms of 2-way communications should be banned for the general public, when a vehicle is in motion. Just too few people that can safely multitask.

I'm sure this comment will stir up some opposition...whaddaya think about communications while driving public roads? There are obvious exceptions, like the passengers, but how do you account for that? At a minimum, the requirement should be a hands-free set-up required of the driver.
