Amy, in a country of 280 million people and a bazillion laws one can always find a few laws which may make sense on paper when passed, but cause ridiculous situations (such as the one described) on implementation. In other words, the needle in the haystack doesn't mean the entire haystack is uncomfortable to rest in.

I think you'll find women have greater equality in the US than in 95% of the world, so in general you should be praising the US sexual equality laws, and not so disgusted.

In the vase majority of the world women cannot even become firefighters....

"Pro-Life" is a misnomer. They are pro-death on many issues, or pro-deadly, in bed with the polluters, tobacco lobby, drugs and gambling, weapons, toxic chemicals, junk foods and against health care for those who need it the most.

The abortion issue is really their excuse to turn back the clock on the sexual revolution and put women back into the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant, ignorant and subservient to husbands. Why anyone falls for this nonsense is beyond me. In reality the religious right doesn't give a damn about the unwanted pregnancy and fertilized egg of some poor woman. If they did, they'd support birth control and sex education.
