re: I'm sure Elroy'd reveal his true alliegences with a course of waterboarding. I guess the point is that when the government doesn't respect rights, real people are in danger. It's not abstract... it's very real and the Elroy that we all know and <ahem> love could be a prime candidate for extraordinary rendition and torture. Move the bar just a little lower and A LOT more people become candidates. Democracy is always fragile but is really in danger in times of stress.
