"World religions account for the unsavory characteristics of the human condition as completely as they document the more noble endowments." In the beginning (where have I heard that before <g>) they reflected human ignorance--coupled with family and tribal efforts toward power. The human landscape is littered with thousands of "Chosen Peoples"--some still living in tribes large or small--others dead to even the paleontologists. China means center of the universe. Japan in the dialect means source of the sun. In all the Indian tribes it was "we the people" (something else that sounds vaguely familiar) and "human being"--synonymous with their tribal identity and differentiating them from non-humans. Only the progress of science has allowed at least a few people to conceptualize homo sapiens as a grouping beyond the family, tribe, or Race. Why are some individuals, families, tribes, and Races superior to others? Good question. Probably because God says so...
