As to the job numbers, I recently came across a good analysis (though I don't remember where...) that made a few excellent points. The essence was that because of the worker displacements in the Gulf as a result of Katrina/Rita and the much bigger than usual job losses at the time, we are now observing the rebound by a lot of these workers finding jobs again either in that region or somewhere else. Once the numbers are averaged out over the past six months the story doesn't look anywhere near as peachy anymore.
