Grace once told me McMannis responding to the story of John Henry - that a human is the ultimate economic benefit or something like that - so the more we have - the more specialized we all can become - focus our utility - and advance our world and lives. The united federation of planets had trillions and trillions of people all over - that is how spaceships get built and warp drives and phasers and space elevators and transporters - that cant happen with a few tribal natives on an island eh? hehe But if everyone gets on drugs or becomes too mired in self preservation without considering the bigger melting pot - things will get ugly no? hehe
