Uh, he nailed you and that's the best you can come up with? I just spent $10 on popcorn. You gotta make the effort or I'm demanding a refund on the ticket.

Your whine about niche standards doesn't change the fact Europe opened the door to Qualcomm when they lobbed crap (IS54/136 TDMA) over the wall and forced US providers to either do a forklift upgrade all the way to their billing systems if they made the perpetually unfortunate choice of GSM over IS41-based CDMAOne. Lets not forget CDMAOne providers had AMPS roaming shortly after the first PCS system turned on and Airtouch lost little time in the late 90's pointing out the GSM problem by featuring an Ericsson phone displaying "NO NETWORK" as it was dispatched to a violent plastic death.

Qualcomm has WCDMA base station CSM5200. Apparently its cheaper to use Xilinx/Altera/TI parts than a integrated solution when your base station is the size of a phonebooth.
