That's an interesting motion Jerry. Thanks for posting the factual data. It appears the government is attempting to build its case that minors can accidentally encounter pornographic sites on the net through random innocent channels, even though a parent uses filtering software. In other words, the question is; are porno peddlers manipulating their products via filtering software programs in order to peddle their porn to minors?

Seems to me this case breaks down into two areas.

1. Google's freedom to keep broad based mining information confidential from the government.
2. Parental rights in regard to making it difficult for online pornographic creators from having their product seen by minors.

Definitely a difficult issue to resolve. But it seems to me we could have alleviated this problem by promoting the dot XXX brand name years ago.

What's also interesting to consider is how far we've come from the regulated free television airwaves. Few seem to have cared about government prevention of porn on the airwaves, yet the internet is viewed as a much freer entity.

Google management should carefully think this one through. I hope they haven't responded in a knee-jerk fashion or with arrogant contempt. It appears on the surface the Yahoo management team has hit closer to the law of diminishing return, by giving a bit without selling out the farm. But I reserve the right to be completely wrong. ;-)

Only the future will tell for sure.

As a parent of three children who routinely allow their kids to surf the net, porn concerns me. However, lack of privacy and the free market growth of the internet is also a very important consideration. I can't help but believe their is a gray win-win for all concerned.

Why not .XXX for porn??
