The government meddles in all kinds of parent child issues. Whether they get food for free at public schools, whether they can see porn images at the local conveniance store, whether they can watch X or R rated movies at the local theater. Whether someone considers spanking "child abuse, etc. As a society most people want to protect children from various things. Especially the very young. And cultures continuously adapt laws based on what they believe are the common sense boundaries between intervention and doing nothing. It's human nature. Freedom should always be the path of least resistance though. I wish the government had moved in a different direction to address this issue.
