I couldn't have said it any better than you did, so I won't try... besides, it's bedtime!

Good points, CJ, but if all that happened to me, I'd probably want to keep all those experiences within myself, rather than use them for whatever political gain I could muster.

Of course, I never went through that, so it's hard for me to truly understand what veterans have to deal with. But it's different when Kerry brags about his service and his decorations, then holds himself above criticism from those his minions label "chickenhawks." And I know I'm not alone; most Vietnam vets supported that "draft dodger" Bush over "war hero" Kerry.

As for "vets left hanging," well IMO that's the problem these days where wars are limited and no one wants to start a WWIII, especially in the nuclear age. That's what motivated Truman to hold the 38th parallel, instead of heeding the calls of MacArthur and bombing China. That's what made Vietnam a quagmire, because everyone politician wanted to do the job half-assed, and the horrors of war were just too much for a remote country. Are we at that point in Iraq? Maybe, maybe not. The results certainly aren't comparable on an absolute scale, but since Vietnam the goalposts have moved.

To me, it's all about victory, which is why the Greatest Generation is lucky. No one wants to pay the price for this sort of victory, however. Not even me, and not even the "Chickenhawk in Chief." Instead, we're hoping that the current half-assed solution will be enough, and that the Iraqis themselves will pick up the slack. Then we'll just go back to sleep until we're attacked again.

By the way, send my appreciation to your father for his service in Korea. Like I said before, I'll never understand what he went through or what he has to deal with now, but at least I can send him that much.
