All true and I think a lot of people are better off - but lets look at the other side:

More toilets per capita,

I see lots of new low flush toilets - saves water - but for those of us that dump a big one - it doesnt take the waste away and then the bathrooms start to stink.

more square footage living space per capita,

Yet many tell you that houses today are put up by less capable poorer trained work crews and the houses today are much more shoddy than houses of the past.

more education per capita,

Schools that teach you about brittneys latest hairdo with all the new MATH type education crap is not the same as schools where you had a hard science discipline eh? Intelligent design baby!

more accumulated savings per capita,

So you have more green pieces of paper that have less purchasing power than 30 years ago - ok.

more cars per capita,

Ok - more honda used rice box 4 cylindiers - where are the BIG 454 chevys that even a poor mcdonalds worker could afford 30 years ago? I got pissed off when one of my old bum friends told me for only working 5 hours a week at a gas station changing tires in the 60's he bought a NEW car that beats a modern day dodge viper in acceleration - you know how many hours I would have to work a week changing tires to buy a NEW dodge viper - well you get my drift - more cars - yes - certain measures of QUALITY have went down though.

more TVs per capita,

With more crap brainwashing lifetime TV channels on them.

more telephones per capita,

With more useless calls about brittneys hairdo.

more services per capita (restaurants, hair salons, elective surgery, health services, insurance, lawn care, etc), more food per capita,

I have several friends that left Atlanta and big paying jobs because the frozen food served at restaurants was getting shittier every year - they moved to the county where the food is fresh and tastes better. To get the good stuff in the big city you had to make a lot of money. I noticed this trend in several of the towns I was in - the restaurants prices kept going up - but the damn food was not as good as before.

more books per capita (US leads the world in books per capita),

Ok, more books by jerry springer and grace types on thier DRAMA - like I said to you before - I am tired of those books - there are too many in the library.

more computers per capita,
more bedrooms per capita, etc etc etc.

Quality and quantity - if you live 1000 years grace with new technology - but are in the 1984 society - is that as good as my grandpa who lived much freer and only got 90 years? I understand you are saying - and agree many things have gotten better - but many things are getting worse too - if we walk around with rosy colored glasses all day and dont think about them - we dont fix the bad things.
