I have a sister who has tried to break up with her husband twice. Both times they got back together because while you can split up assets it's almost impossible to split up debt acquired jointly. They don't want to declare BK (because they'll lose their credit cards- which they need to lose if you ask me), but because they are technically insolvent (debts exceed assets) they feel they have to duke it out under one roof.

Their debt laden lifestyle has kept them together!
