we can structure society to remove certain temptation or bad things - why not do so?

Who's "we"? Government? You want more government intrusion into the choices you make every day because you lack whatever will power necessary to avoid them by yourself? Do you really think they can make better choices than you can? Even if they could, don't you think it's your right to decide how you pursue happiness?

I suggested that illegal drugs were better off staying illegal a while back and everyone jumped all over me. It seems people want it both ways, to be protected from their weaknesses but the freedom to screw themselves up. Once you give the government the right to decide what is good for you, you lose that decision for yourself. Plus, who says they are right? In my lifetime I've seen the whole gambit of extremes in what various government experts have decided is healthy or not healthy. At one time it was the official view that women who ran would do permanent damage to their reproductive organs!
