When I was a teenager in Hoboken, NJ we had a cat do that! The apartment next door caught fire and Sneaky woke us up right before the place filled with smoke and we evacuated. Our neighbor next door died in the fire. A couple years later I was in boot camp during one of the hottest summer in decades and my mother, because the cat was panting, had it put to sleep. This was before air-conditioning was popular and she didn't know that this is the way cat's sweat.
