You really can't see reality, can you?

The ABC on-campus interview was scheduled weeks in advance. Google knew the camera crew would be there.

The original request for the search data from the DOJ came last summer, nearly 7 months ago.

Yet Google waited until THE DAY THE ABC REPORTERS WERE GOING TO BE IN THE BUILDING to issue a press release saying "we will not comply with this request" ?

What color is the sky in your world? Of course this was PR. And yes, anyone with a brain could have predicted the public response. In case you havent noticed it, Google has spent their entire corporate history cultivating the Slashdot uber-geek fanboy base. "Standing up to the government over privacy" is a pretty easy bet to guess how Google's fans would react.

Oh come on, just because someone speculated that GOOG decided to publicize this you cite it as real? Tell me their reasoning. Do you think they can calculate whether there would be public outcry or public admiration, and what good would it do them? Nobody takes that kind of risk belatedly and consciously because public relations events like that are completely unpredictable and could easily backfire. They don't need that kind of publicity, and they are not the kind of company that would belatedly manipulate the public interest that way. Just shows the amount of jealousy out there that anybody would even speculate thus. They need a monopoly on real estate/eyeballs and ever greater inflows of ad revenue. PERIOD.

Oh come on, Jill!

Of my entire post, you zeroed in on a most superficial comment, which actually demonstrated the power of this company.

BTW 46% is lots of eyeballs. Also, recall "Google Print", no doubt, Google's burden for the rest of the humanity.

I take it the excessive volatility, risks in technology, pricing and reach, failure to realize economies of scope -- these don't really matter in determining the intrinsic value of the stock. I am looking for the broadbased value chains around Google - like those of Ebay's or Microsoft's. Not the "page rank" score boosters, which actually work to undermine its trustworthiness.

Maybe it's indeed become a one-decision stock.
