It's nice country, but who wants to live with a bunch of whackos? A lot of them objected to any kind of forest management that interfered with their bootleg pot farms. Others are just plain whacko.

I'll never forget a conference on Old Growth that I went to in Portland. All the big scientific names were there. I don't remember too much of what they said, but at that conference thousands of flyers were handed out inviting employees of the federal agency I worked for to join AFSEEE. AFSEEE stood for Association of (federal agency) Employees for Environmental Ethics.

Some people actually joined. Enough for the association to become a major obstructionist force against responsible management of federal forests.

That was pretty much the beginning of the end. It wasn't long before all the over-educated types that worked against forest management found out that their own jobs were being paid for by the very devil that they gut shot.
