Yes, the Germans did make a lot of gasoline and diesel from coal. South Africa has done the same for decades and continues to do so today. The technology is there, and now it is being applied to other carbon chains in common garbage and animal waste. It's just one of those technologies waiting for the price of oil to get high enough for it to become feasible.
