Sounds right, but!!

We have not secured iraq enough that makes it a forward base in the way i assume you mean. There are chemical alis all over the world looking to do us in and i dont think that in and of itself is a biggie. Wasnt zarquawi in north kurdistan back then? Both would have worked together where possible no doubt, but i dont think that was major either.

I wonder what would have happened if we had left saddam alone and how he would be reacting to irans getting close to nukes? You would think that would have been a huge threat to iraq which they would have been powerless to do anything about. Hell, losing sanctions back then might have had more to do with fear of iran than with hatred of the US. At any rate its a fascinating question.

BTW a timetable doesnt rule out US presence on the porous border areas in decent numbers and with much airpower.
