"the essential thing to realize about the IRA scenario is not that the IRA changed its stripes, but that everybody else got tired of the troubles. Britain, Ireland, and most of the people of Northern Ireland wanted them to stop. So there was pressure to stop."

Yes that is true and thats why it took so long in the ira case as well. Nadine O'Carroll might have written the same post as you just did 30 years ago about ireland too. Thats why even a hudna is better than full scale war at this time. Let them run that country--if they do they need aid and aid can be turned off as quickly as its turned on if terror returns. As for countries you mention Syria may be on the verge of regime change and the saudis may need peace in palestine more than any other state. There are different stripes of fundamentalists. Do you consider Hamas al queda like or al quaeda like only as it applies to israel today???? It is a big distinction if holy war has more to do with land than wahabism.
