You should consider a worker's salary or pension to be an income stream much like an annuity if you want to compare it to a business owner's business. Both represented the sweat and savings of a lifetime, but one is considered an asset for heirs and the other is considered just a temporary circumstance. It's an artificial distinction based on old notions of property as the only form of wealth and income.
