What's to be said? Anyone who has been on SI for very long would have already known it. You've said pretty much the same thing for years. We all know that logic gets lost at the edges- and also, logic doesn't count in the the things you enjoy- so when we pick our political philosophy, we pick something that emotionally appeals to us- thus all of us are starting with an illogical base, because it's a personal preference. The problem is there is very little you can do about it. Sure, you can force yourself to try to have some empathy for the other person, and his or her position, and force yourself to consider the merits of their case- but who, exactly, is going to force themselves to do that? Not the real partisans- not unless you happen to have a gun on you, which you plan to point at them. The people who will heed this article are people who were already doing it, or who probably weren't very partisan to begin with. So what does it really matter? If confirms something we already knew, and it won't change anything.

It was a most interesting article and thanks Kay for posting it. It illuminates for me some of what happens to me when I some articles that are posted on S.I. and why, for my own health ...as some things were just too upsetting... I had to delete some subject marks from my perusals.. There have to be comfortable places and VFC is one. Would one call these biases or are we all just human enough to have integrated our own prejudices and ways of thinking into our psyche..AND how do we reverse these if should we choose to do so.
