Hynix 4th-Quarter Profit Quadruples, Beats Estimates - Bloomberg.com

Bloomberg.com reports Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world's second-largest memory chipmaker, reported four-quarter net income quadrupled, beating analysts' estimates, on rising demand for semiconductors used in portable gadgets such as MP3 music players. Fourth-quarter net income surged to 751 billion won ($770 million) from 186 billion won a year earlier, the Ichon, South Korea-based company said today in a statement. Sales climbed 31 percent to 1.7 trillion won. Global sales of NAND flash memory chips used in portable gadgets will grow faster than any other category this year, World Semiconductor Trade Statistics forecasts. Hynix and bigger rival Samsung Electronics Co. supply the chips to customers such as Apple Computer Inc. for use in storing songs and pictures in digital music players and cameras.
