A report from Marketwatch on the NVLS quarterly report tonight.

<< Novellus profit tops estimates

January 25, 2006 19:06:15 (ET)

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Novellus Systems Inc. reported a fourth-quarter profit Wednesday that fell 39% from the same period last year, yet the results topped analysts' estimates for both earnings and sales.

Investors applauded the results, bidding up shares of the semiconductor-equipment maker (NVLS, Trade) 5.7% to $29.50 in late action. The stock closed up almost 1% at $27.92.

Novellus reported net income of $23 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with a profit of $37.5 million or 27 cents a share for last year. Revenue for the period was $332.3 million vs. $340.3 million a year ago.

Excluding certain items, earnings would have been $26.6 million, or 20 cents a share.

Analysts were expecting a profit of 16 cents a share on revenue of $314.6 million, according to consensus estimates from Thomson First Call.

The company had said in a November midquarter update that fourth-quarter revenue would fall in a range of $305 million to $315 million and reiterated earnings estimates of 15 cents to 20 cents a share, excluding charges.>>

I should have thought of it earlier - why is AMAT up so much tonight in AH. It is obviously due to the good quarterly NVLS report. NVLS up a 1.00 or more in AH, and KLAC is also up about 1.00. Others may be up as well. Maybe it can hold thru until tomorrow and we can see some positive green tomorrow instead of all the red I have been looking at lately?
