On the other hand, they may turn out to be like the dog who caught the school bus and doesn't know what to do with it. In which case, they'll start another war.

It's a lot different when you are running things. I expect them to keep up the local rhetoric while dealing with the Euros and the Israelis. Now that they are out in the open it will be a lot easier for Israel to target leaders if they keep up the terrorism.

But it's just possible that because of their new legitimacy, they might have to assume some responsibility for what happens in the territories, in the normal way of governments, even in Third World kleptocracies. It will be tough for them to claim that the anarchy in the streets or the missiles hitting Israel (& the Israeli counter-strikes) have nothing do with them, especially in Gaza.

I think Hamas getting a majority is substantially better than if they had done well but remained in the minority. They would have gained a measure of legitimacy while Israel would still be negotiating with a government that didnt control the guns. Whatever Hamas does, they are going to be held accountable for actually improving the situation for the Palestinian people....a much tougher proposition than what they have done for the last 20 years.

Of course, the key to any Democracy isnt the first election it is the second. The US might not be able to influence Hamas much, but they had better make damn sure that their are successive elections.

Watch the Euros claim that now that Hamas has won an election, they are "moderates."

To which the obvious answer is, yeah, well Hitler won an election too.

I'd LOL! --- but it's pretty sad. A few years ago I saved some excerpts from the Hamas "charter". May be a good moment to refresh memories.
