Nokia expects N.American mkt shr gains to continue

HELSINKI, Jan 26 (Reuters) - The world's biggest mobile phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday it expects to continue making market share gains in North America.

"When I look at the momentum, that I see as we speak, in the U.S. it's going to continue or extend in Q1," Chief Executive Jorma Ollila told a conference call with analysts after the company announced its fourth-quarter results.

JM - you are of course right. But don't forget Q is supposed to be the "gatekeper"...remember that. The W-cdma conversions, HSPDA starts, great success in Japan and the US in ev-do one could be forgiven for expecting some eye catching numbers!

35% will happen again, Jim, and I'm no longer talking about five years down the road. WCDMA is inevitable. Sometime within this year, or rather the next 365 days, QCOM will bust a move with big numbers. Way too much has been invested in WCDMA by the collective wireless world. It is the equivalent of a worldwide monopoly. If its not happening fast enough the players will simply force its hand by business moves such as eliminating non WCDMA capable handsets.
