Palestinian vote puts Olmert in quandary
JERUSALEM, Jan. 26 (UPI)

upi.com

-- Hamas' Palestinian election victory has put acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in political jeopardy in the run-up to Israel's March election.

The Hamas victory strengthens Olmert's Kadima party's stand because it rules out any possibility of permanent agreement talks, Ha'aretz reported Thursday. Hamas' win also adds power to Kadima's "no partner" theory, which states that the only alternative available to Israel is to unilaterally determine the border.

However, if Olmert shows signs of softening toward Hamas, his political rival, Likud Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu, would base his party's election campaign on the claim the Gaza pullout was a reward for Hamas.

If Olmert threatens to sever ties with the Palestinians, or impose any other punishment, he will find himself facing increasing international pressure to honor the democratic election results, the newspaper said.

Olmert took over from Prime Minister Ariel Sharon earlier this month after Sharon suffered a massive stroke. Sharon remains hospitalized.
