Soviets moved west into eastern areas of countries like poland who was then recompensated with lands taken from nazi germany. This is well known or was when i went to school.

Obviously, the Germans' big mistake was not to herd all their refugees into permanent dp camps and make the UN pay for their upkeep in perpetuity. Then they would have had everybody's sympathy and could agitate for their "right of return" to the Sudentenland, East Prussia and Konigsburg.
