just read through today's posts, i don't have a link, but Murdy talked about NEM wanting to make an acquisition in Ghana in an interview on Bloomberg.
as far as INDEPENDENT companies in Ghana go, there's not a whole lot on offer. i think we can rule out both GFI ( Lassonde won't touch South Africa since the originally planned Franco/GFI merger fell through ) and IAG ( because IAG is only minority owner in mines operated by other parties ) , and we can probably also rule out AU at this stage, since AAUK continues to hold the majority of shares ( of course a deal between NEM and AAUK isn't totally out of the question either ) .
this is what gives rise to the GSS speculation. after all, GSS is beaten down market-cap wise, and has just acquired fresh resources in Ghana. it also owns a fair amount of exploration property there. it's not so far-fetched considering its production is set to rise to 700K oz. within the next two to three years.
