If you attack the religion specifically you just make them feel like getting in to groups, to respond to an attack- and the fringe religion can begin to get support from main stream adherents. What you need to do (imo) is focus on other things- in this country, the separation of state and ALL churches, rather than making it about the Christian church, or even the fanatical Christian churches. I think it's important not to make martyrs out of folks- because everyone loves a martyr.
