I understand, though, you aversion to the term.

It's more than a disagreement over terms.
War implies an extra-judicial role.
This is what plays into the hands of the criminal gangs.
Our country surrenders the concept of rule of law, and so there is nothing to apply to the criminals.

War also applies that somehow the country itself is at stake. That just isn't the case with the current crop of Al Qaeda. They may be able to create some flashy mayhem, but they are no serious threat to us as a nation unless, (or with Bush Jr. in office ... until) they are able to convey to other state players that the U.S. is itself a threat in which case they might convey the true weapons of mass terror. Bush Jr.'s chimera that was used to seize oil fields may become a reality by his actions.
