One of the most thorough surveys about RE related borrowing comes from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. It's well documented with all kinds of graphs and data tables in the index.

I've spent a lot of time forming my conclusions using the data they cite.

The other source is the debt service and financial obligations ratios used by the Fed.
