Consider stock not as a principal only.
The stockholder would get from a stream of dividends profits, but also a bit of principal back which would accrue to the employees. The net result would be that a purely passive investment would eventually get paid off, like a bond is paid off, and the employees would gain assets in the company. It would not rely on the good will of the upper management, it would be the way things work.
