THAT established, no situation fazes him. President Clinton and the Monica Lewinsky scandal? "If he'd been a client of mine, it never would have happened," Mr. Clifford said. "Knowing what he was getting up to, I would have made sure his back was covered."

What about David Beckham, whose goose was cooked when the wily Ms. Loos produced intimate text messages on her cellphone, apparently sent by him — the electronic equivalent of Ms. Lewinsky's semen-stained dress?

Mr. Beckham has denied sending the messages, but Mr. Clifford could have provided a plausible explanation anyway.

"You would have found a way to make sure the phone wasn't in his possession," Mr. Clifford said. "He's lost it, or he's loaned it to one of his mates and his mate says, 'I was doing this as a giggle.' "

But that would be a lie, right?

"I've created false images for people all my life," Mr. Clifford declared. "I'm quite happy to make up stories about someone to create an image."
