Why doesn't the Times just put a "We Hate Bush!" banner on its op-ed page and have everybody take a long lunch?

I think this is actually in their short term plans.:o)

Most Americans agree with the New York Times on the issue of Bush. They disapprove of his Presidency.

Probably for the same reason that Fox News doesn't change it's name to the 'Bush News Service', or the Washington Times doesn't rename itself 'The Authoritarian and Moonie Times' --- it likely would be bad for business, Jim.
