The hunt for the Democratic middle

This Prospect article suggests that the root of the Democratic Party split is between followers of George Lakoff (centrists who believe the party platform is good, but the message is framed badly) vs. followers of Thomas Frank (lefties who believe the party needs to change to a platform of economic populism).

They examine the findings of a market-research firm, Environics, which suggest that both are wrong and Americans are rejecting both traditionalism and progressivism in favor of a hedonistic, authoritarian nihilism.

Mother Jones questions some of Prospect's findings about cultural conservatism, countering them with data from both NES and the General Social Survey.
