The most fascinating scenario would be if they COULD muster 41 votes to prevent cloture. Their bluff called, what would Mad Dog and the Six Dwarfs do? They'd have to either cave to the left or the hated conservatives. But I doubt we will be treated to THAT show until the next nomination (and the chance of Dems winning the Senate in 2006 are one in a hundred-thousand.) Senators like Satan would only commit to opposing cloture on Alito if they are sure the 40 votes is NOT there. The old political trick of having one's cake and eating it too...
