No, I really believe that one state with both living in it will not work. There is so much hatred that has built up over 50 years, the only thing that will work is a separation, followed by baby steps at reconciliation and confidence building over a very long period of time. This is classic diplomacy and negotiation. When things are this bad, you can't just stuff the two people together and think they will be mature enough to solve all of their problems over night.

I think what is workable is for Israel to get the hell out of the West Bank and go back to the U.N. sanctioned borders and then for the U.S. to sponsor a U.N. resolution proposing that Gaza and the West Bank, lead by Hamas to be a sovereign state. Sounds horrible, but we need to think outside he box. That will lead to two states and people that can negotiate on a more even footing. For instance, Israel currently taxes the Palestinians and then remits the tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority. What is that all about? The Palestinians should tax themselves and use the money to build their gov't, institutions, schools, and commerce. Israelis should take no part in that, except as one country offering trade agreements with another.

Don't worry, though. Bush will never do it. So he is going to act just like Arafat...never losing an opportunity to lose an opportunity.
