Well, maybe it was in the wake of joining EU Ireland had to change their law.

There never has been a continental European tradition for acquiring citizenship where one is born.
Here like actually also in Japan citizenship was inherited from the father.
In recent years also from the mother by choice by age 21. This is no new invention aimed at limiting immigration (=keeping the poor people out).
For the US, however, a nation founded on immigration, citizenship by birth within its borders was a natural way.
Most likely some changes may take place soon here even though I have some problems seeing what could be done unless the general rules for US citizenship is changed to the European model. I mean, open discrimination against any specific ethnic group is not the US way, right? And, by the way, I mean that.

As for Europeans blaming the US for being racial, that is only one of a plethora of negative sentiments being off loaded in same popular direction.
Most likely for the purpose of keeping a full load of less flattering such garbage action within their own borders out of focus.

RE:"Ireland (Eire) had such a law and was forced to obsolete it to be allowed to join the EU."

I thought it was after Ireland joined the EU?

Why don't european countries allow anchor babies? Yet so many europeans are quick to call the USA a racist, imperialist country. Sometimes they just call the US stupid. I can't imagine why. <G>

As far as I know, every baby born in a European country is a citizen of that country.
