Hi Condor. Another use is brass, where depending on the alloy it can range up to 40%. I don't know the tonnage used per year but it must be significant. A few years ago I saw a promotional video produced by a large zinc company and they were putting an effort into producing roofing products, but there were still quite a few issues unresolved.

I can't remember the details, but it is also an important element in rust protection for bridges and concrete columns for bridges.

My thinking is that is a very important metal, touching most peoples lives, but one that most cannot relate to.

Cheers,

Formerly Sarge

I would speculate that galvanized steel represents less than .01 of one percent of total steel production. Mind you that is still quite a bit.

It's hard to say how much of total steel production is galvanized, because it can be galvanized well after production, but it's much higher than that, probably 20-30% or more. In 1994, galvanized steel was over 15% of U.S. production:

zinc.org
Galvanized steel has long been one of the most used building materials in the world. In 1994, the U.S. consumed more than 14 million metric tons of galvanized steel for a multitude of uses. Steel's combination of strength, formability and cost is unmatched by any other building material.

In 1994, the total U.S. production of raw steel was 91.2 million metric tons:
minerals.usgs.gov

The use of galanized steel has increased significantly since then, and is used extensively in China. China consumes more than 25% of the world's zinc each year, and had 27.8% growth in zinc consumption in 2004 (http://www.yukonzinc.com/zincMarkets.htm -- good explanation of the zinc supply gap situation).

"Zinc and Steel
Zinc's most remarkable quality is its natural capacity to protect. By protecting steel against corrosion, zinc protects buildings, automobiles, ships and steel structures of every kind from corrosion by the atmosphere, water, and soil. By protecting against corrosion and its costly effects, zinc extends the life of steel, thus protecting investments. A typical galvanized coating can now be expected to last 70 to 150 years without maintenance in most urban and rural atmospheres."

RHEINZINK® - The Company
RHEINZINK® was founded in 1966 by the Grillo, Stolberger Zink companies and the United German Metalworks ("Vereinigte Deutschen Metallwerke"); production began in 1969. The head office is located in Datteln, on the outskirts of the Ruhr district. As the first zinc manufacturer in Europe, RHEINZINK® replaced the conventional pack-rolling process with a new innovative technology – a continuous broadband casting rolling line.

Today, RHEINZINK® is part of the Grillo conglomerate. It has a manufacturing capacity of ca. 160,000 tonnes annually and employs more than 800 people. RHEINZINK® has offices in 19 countries worldwide. In-house Research and Development Departments are constantly working to improve both processing and production quality. Furthermore, practical products are developed here, which substantially facilitate process and installation because of their economic applicability and increase the competitiveness of the skilled trades because of their functional reliability.

The Zinc Initiative
RHEINZINK® is a member of the ZINC INITIATIVE. The ZINC INITIATIVE is an amalgamation of German zinc producers, manufacturers of semi-finished products, users (e.g. the hot dip galvanizing industry) and producers of zinc compounds (e.g. zinc oxide) under the umbrella of the Metal Business Association ("Wirtschaftsvereinigung Metalle e.V."). The goal of this Association is to familiarize people with the many possibilities of zinc, its properties and its significance as an essential trace element.
