"a bunched fist meaning “stop”" I'd wonder why the soldier was giving me the black power salute just before they shot me! God only knows how the Iraqi drivers are interpreting the hand signals. Perhaps they've got it through the grapvine now that a "bunched fist" means they're going to kill one of them. The thoughtful, considered thing to do would have been to find out what signals Iraqi traffic cops were using, and use those. I suppose that's too much too expect from the military.
