Back then, the GNP was manufactured in this country. What you charge on your credit card doesn't add to your bottom-line. It gets subtracted, OK?

GDP counts DEBT SPENDING as a positive, which is actually a negative. GDP also does not take into account depletion of vital resources. It counts over-consumption as a positive. Like if we burn up 5 years of gasoline in 2.5 years it counts that as twice as good. GDP is an outdated and misleading measuring stick. The real measuring stick for the Bush economy is to ask what, if anything, is actually paid for without borrowing more from the communist Chinese?
