Ben, do you think longer term that Microsoft faces pricing pressures on their Windows and Office franchises?

It's hard for me to believe that a viable alternative hasn't come on the market so far. Seems to me only a matter of time.

The missing link to make Linux more accessible is far better support for Wi-Fi (I have to use a wrapper that uses the Windows driver)

Add to the movement - code up some drivers and send them over to sourceforge eh? I heard GOOG was going to build free wifi - they probably have lots of goodies in the works.

gigaom.com

& better support for scanners. It already has free browser & e-mail client (Firefox & Thunderbird among others), great NIC, printer, and monitor support. Built in firewall, no need (yet) for virus scanner. So my initial software cost was $0 and ongoing costs each year is also $0.

Think about it from the hardware and software peoples view - MSFT gives then revenue stream with thier tricks - people like you that want a FREE society - that does not compute. There is already so much critical mass in MSFT and Vista is going to add to their stranglehold with thier secure/trusted computing that so many big companies want to protect THEMSELVES not you dear citizen.

Buy Vista or Else

theodp writes "Upgrade or keep crashing was the tagline when Windows XP was introduced. So how will Windows Vista be marketed? 'I'd hate to see something bad happen to your PC,' seems to be one pitch. Even if new features won't get you to upgrade to Vista, you should buy Vista for the security, urged Windows Chief Jim Allchin. Are commercials featuring Tony Soprano next? Bada Bing!"

So my point is that Google will have to do quite a lot of development to bring Linux (or something new) to the mainstream.

Open source is not about the other guy developing and doing ALL the work eh? I thought it was about YOU dear citizen taking the initiative when u saw a need and providing to make the world better. Learning programming takes time and effort - if you are not willing to spend that to make the drivers - then you are gonna have to PAY someone else to do so eh? You can only expect the monkey boy to work for FREE so long huh?

I know this guy that listens to the beatles - he could take a shower, put on nice clothes, go to the bar and gets lots of sex - he has brad pitt looks and knows how to charm the ladies - but he is lazy - he would rather pay a hooker than do all that work and effort to get sex for free you know. hehe
